Culinary crimes? Bookstore owning sleuths? Daffy desginer detectives? What do you like in a mystery series? I'm in the process of creating a new cozy series in my mind and I've been looking around in the wide world for inspiration. The choices are overwhelming! So I put it to you, dear bloggers. What do you like in a mystery series? Do you like a "gimmicks" for lack of  a better word, like recipes in your books? Or themes that link a series such as "holiday murders" and such? I'd LOVE to know what your thoughts are. My bitty pea brain needs some stirring up!

I like holiday themes in my mysteries. I also like unusual settings, such as a country outside the US. The culinary thing seems to have been done quite a bit, but there is room for more of that, and it lends itself to quirky characters. I like women who are independent in thinking and action, but loving and compassionate as well. Are men allowed as the sleuth in the inspirational mysteries? I don't think there are any so far, or at least not many.

I'm always up for more recipes...how about a Greek detective? The culture and the food are both interesting. How about a faithful parrot sidekick? :)

Wow! Great ideas! Maybe we could combine them and do a male Greek protag with a pet parrot who solves crimes on major holidays! What do you think?

I think triplets would make for a great mystery. I like stories involving multiples. A story set in the Caribbean, my favorite place, would be wonderful, and think of the pleasure of the research. I was just writing to another author about the TV show Monk, and I think having a hero that is obsessive-compulsive lends itself to a lot of quirks. Unusual occupations also play well-animal therapist, storm chaser, etiquette consultant, wedding planner, underwater welder, blimp pilot, pet detective, team mascot, theme park character or lady bullfighter, to name a few.

I like mysteries with recipes, holiday themes, home repair, National Parks, etc. I'd be interested in reading stories with gimmicks about antique hunters/dealers, librarians/book store owners, etc.

Forensic science mysteries are fun ...with science playing a part in the solving of said mystery. Throw in a Cowboy and I could fall in love....lol.
